How Junk Food Affects Our Health

Junk food is a pejorative term for food containing a large number of calories from sugar or fat with little fiber, protein, vitamins, or minerals. There are some negative effects of junk foods like obesity, cardiovascular disease, etc.

This is how junk food affects our health:

Digestive and Cardiovascular Systems

Most of the drinks and fast foods are loaded with carbohydrates with a very little amount of fiber. When our digestive system breaks down these foods, the curbs are released as glucose into your bloodstream. So blood sugar increases.

Your pancreas responds to the sugar in glucose by releasing insulin which transports sugar throughout your body to cells that need it for your energy. As your body uses this sugar, your blood sugar remains at the normal level. This way junk foods affect our digestive systems so early precaution should be taken place as soon as possible.

Sugar and Fat

Fast food meals have added sugar which has extra calories but very little nutrition. Research says if you eat 100 to 150 calories of sugar every day that will be enough for you. It is equal to 6 to 9 teaspoons. But most of the drinks contain 12 ounces of soda which contains 8 teaspoons of sugar, which is equivalent to 130 calories and 40 grams of sugar.

Sodium

Fast food has become tastier because of the combination of fat, sugar, and sodium. But diets that are high in sodium can be the cause of water retention and that is why we feel puffy, bloated, or swollen after eating those fast foods. It may be the cause of blood pressure, heart, or cardiovascular problems. According to one study, 90-95% of adults underestimate how much sodium is in fast food.

Respiratory System

Excess calories in the food may cause obesity, asthma, shortness of breath, etc. It creates pressure on your heart and lungs, and symptoms may show up with little exertion. You can feel difficulty breathing while walking, running, and climbing the stairs. The study shows consuming fast food three times a week makes it difficult for people to be healthy affecting the respiratory system as well.

Central Nervous System

For a short time period, fast food can satisfy hunger but it has less positive results in the long term. Fast foods like pastry and other bakery items can be the cause of depression and in the improper flow of blood circulation also. If the central nervous system is hampered, then each and every organ becomes stiff to work. So at the primary stage, if these junk foods have an effect on CNS, it becomes troublesome to cure or recover.

Reproductive System

These Junk Foods contain phthalates which interrupt how hormones act in our body. Exposure to high levels of these chemicals could lead to reproductive issues, including birth defects. So if you avoid junk foods it will be beneficial for you and your baby.

Integumentary System

Earlier chocolate and some junk foods like pizza or pasta have taken the blame for acne breakouts, but according to the Mayo Clinic, it is carbohydrates. Carbohydrate-rich foods lead to blood sugar spikes and these sudden jumps in blood sugar levels may trigger acne. So for controlling these integumentary systems, you should avoid these junk foods.

Skeletal System

In a human body, there are 206 bones. Carbohydrates and sugar in fast food increase the acid quantity in any food item. These acids can break the tooth enamel also. As tooth enamel disappears, bacteria can take hold, and cavities may develop. Obesity can also lead to complications with bone density and muscle mass. People who are suffering from this disease have a greater risk of falling and breaking bones. So you should maintain a healthy diet to recover from this disease.

These are the several negative effects of eating junk foods. Consuming junk food once in a while is fine but regular intake of these types of foods can cause health issues and hamper your CNS, reproductive system, and skeletal system as well.
